Originally established in 1987 as the ACTFL Edwin Cudecki Award, it was named in honor of the Director of Foreign Languages for Chicago Public Schools who dedicated his career to fostering collaboration between international business, 语言教育, and international studies.

In 2024, the 董事会 voted to change the name of the award in order to broaden the scope of possible recipients, recognizing a diverse array of policymakers, 公务员, 商业领袖, and education advocates who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to public service in the realm of language and cultural education.
